Andy’s favourite upwinged insect imitation, the Quill Olive Dun is an absolute classic dry fly and worth of a space in EVERY river angler’s dry fly box. Perfect for those flatter areas of the river – think gentle sippers in a steady bubble line, light tippets, big, clever fish. The size and proportions of the Quill Olive Dun mean this it’s a hatch-matcher, without being too specific. Large Dark Olives, Iron Blues, Blue Winged Olives, Medium Olives – it really will do the lot. Not a fly for the heavier water – the All Purpose Olive is the one for this – the Quill Olive Dun will fool those fish which have time to examine your imitation. Even better, after a few casts, the Quill Olive Dun will start to dip below the surface, just like an emerger – it’s two flies in one! Treat that wing with Hunt’s Original dust and it’ll float for as long as you want.
