One of Andy’s absolute favourite dry flies, the Sparkle DHE (Deer Hair Emerger) is a spectacular all-rounder with serious pedigree. Traditionally used as a caddis emerger pattern, the beauty of the DHE is that it just imitates ‘food’, rather than being too specific. It could be a caddis, could be an upwing – it could be anything!
Our Sparkle DHE has a few little tweaks from the normal commercial patterns, the most obvious being that subtle sparkle in the body, which occurs when the natural insect is trying to escape the shuck – a deadly trigger. The other change we’ve made is using about 25% more deer hair than many commercial patterns, so ours float better, and if it starts to water log then you’ve got more fibres to work floatant in to. Just remember, don’t dress the body, just the wing – they love that big scruffy body hanging below the film!
This is a pattern for the flatter water, it’s not a riffle fly. Those glassy flats, tricky fish which don’t seems to want to take what you’ve already go on – throw the Sparkle DHE at those fish! It’s pulled us so many takes over the years, in situations where it felt like nothing else was working. They can’t resist that big scruffy body hanging below the surface.
